THE AMERICA’S CUP
The America’s Cup is the oldest contested trophy in international sport.

First hosted in Great Britain in 1851 when Yacht America beat the best the British could offer. The victory symbolised a triumph for the new world over the old and unseated Great Britain as the word’s undisputed maritime power.

The victors donated the trophy to the New York Yacht Club under a Deed of Gift, which stated that the trophy was to be
“a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations.”

And thus the America’s Cup was born, named after the first winning schooner.
The oldest trophy in international sport is also the most difficult to win. In over 150 years since the first race only four nations have won the Cup.

In 2017 Groupama Team France is looking to make it five.
